“I did not realize the innumerable instances in which I set things on fire in my paintings until reflecting on my body of works. While I often think about growth, fire was never a symbol of rebirth for me, personally. It is just a symbol of instant change. A flame says ‘it happens right here, right now’ and this change is not painful, it is bright. It casts shadows and warmth and lovely things as something turns to ash. Though I may change and burn a million times and burn a million things, I have yet to fear it.”
